ABSTRACT: Insects commonly well-known as white grubs are the larval phase of beetles that belong to the Melolonthidae (Coleoptera). This family contains an expressive number of insect species that have different bioecological functions in the agroecosystems in the adult and immature phases. In four of five trophic levels, they are primary and secondary consumers, secondary producers and decomposers. In Brazil there are registred about 1008 species of Melolonthidae whose larvae live in the soil. Some of them are considered important pests; normally the larval phase feed the crop roots causing damages. The symptoms occur in patches with smaller plants, yellow leaves, and drastic reduction in the plant population. The occurence of those insects in the... |

ABSTRACT: The cassava (Maninhot esculenta Crantz) it is an important source of energy, it has rusticity and high yield potential, and is the base food for more than 700 million people in the world. It is considered one of the most tolerant growing crop to the insects damages, however, is a host plant about 200 species of arthropods in the American continent. In Brazil the most hazardous pests are present in the aerial part of the plant causing damages in the leaves, sprout destruction, stems and branches damages, leaves fall, depressing yield and in some cases causing plant death. Recently, the presence of mealybugs in the cassava roots and also in the leaves has been detected in States of Goiás, Minas Gerais, Bahia e Distrito Federal. The continuous... |

ABSTRACT: In recent years, white grubs (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) have become a serious problem in soybean crops Glycine max (L.) Meril in the "Cerrado" of Brazil (Middle-Western Region). The genus Phyllophaga Harris has been suggested by many authors as one of the most serious pests in diverse crops in Latim America. In Brazil, the most important species of this genus occur mainly in the south of the country, and are P. cuyabana (Moser) in soybean and P. triticophaga in wheat. In the "Cerrado" of Federal District and state of Goiás the specimens of the white grub. damaging soybean, were identified as P. capillata (Blanchard). Expensive and systematic yield losses caused by P. capillata have been observed in large soybean commercial areas. Crops sown in... |
